Donald M. Payne Jr., a five-term Democratic congressman from New Jersey, has died at the age of 65. Payne Jr. passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, after battling a cardiac episode for several weeks.

Payne Jr. was a prominent figure in Newark politics, having served as the city's mayor from 1997 to 2002 before being elected to Congress in 2012. He succeeded his father, Donald M. Payne Sr., who became the first Black congressman from New Jersey in 1989.

As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Payne Jr. was a vocal advocate for human rights and social justice both domestically and internationally. He also served on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

Payne Jr.'s passing has sent shockwaves through the Newark community and beyond. Tributes have poured in from colleagues, friends, and constituents, who remembered him as a dedicated public servant and a passionate advocate for his district.

The flags at Newark City Hall were lowered to half-staff in Payne Jr.'s honor, and a memorial service is planned for later this week. The date and time of the service will be announced by the Payne family.

Payne Jr. is survived by his wife, Sheila Oliver, New Jersey's Lieutenant Governor, and their three children.
